Twelve years after The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt first launched, CD Projekt Red has officially confirmed a third expansion — Songs of the Past — targeting a 2027 release on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, and PC. Geralt of Rivia returns as protagonist. The expansion is co-developed with Fool's Theory. Further details arrive in late summer 2026.
On May 27, 2026, CD Projekt Red confirmed The Witcher 3: Wild Hunt — Songs of the Past as the game's third paid story expansion. The announcement was originally planned for a REDstreams broadcast on May 28, but an unplanned appearance on the RED Launcher forced the studio to go public early. The expansion has a confirmed 2027 release window; no specific date or month has been set.
Players will return as Geralt of Rivia. This contrasts directly with The Witcher 4, where Ciri takes over as the lead character. The previous two expansions — Hearts of Stone (2015) and Blood and Wine (2016) — were the last story content released for the game before this announcement, making Songs of the Past the first new expansion in roughly eleven years. Fool's Theory is a Polish independent studio established in Bielsko-Biała in 2015. CEO and co-owner Jakub Rokosz worked at CD Projekt Red for five years (2010–2015) as a quest designer on both The Witcher 2 and The Witcher 3. Design director Karolina Kuzia-Rokosz also contributed to those titles.
The studio has provided co-development support for Larian Studios on Divinity: Original Sin 2 and Baldur's Gate 3, and for People Can Fly on Outriders. Their own released titles include the isometric open-world game Seven: The Days Long Gone (2017) and the Warsaw-set RPG The Thaumaturge (2024), published by 11 Bit Studios.
Fool's Theory is simultaneously working on the remake of the original The Witcher (2007) in Unreal Engine 5 for CD Projekt Red. Songs of the Past is a separate project from that remake.
CD Projekt Red currently has four active projects: The Witcher 4 (full production, Ciri as protagonist, no release date set), Songs of the Past (co-developed with Fool's Theory), a second Cyberpunk franchise title, and two projects codenamed Sirius and Hadar.
Following the May 27 announcement, CD Projekt shares fell approximately 4% on the Warsaw Stock Exchange. Analyst Michał Wojciechowski from Ipopema Securities noted the market had expected the expansion in 2026, not 2027. Questions also surfaced over whether The Witcher 4's release could move to 2028. CD Projekt has not confirmed a date for that title.
The complete Witcher franchise has sold over 85 million copies, with The Witcher 3 accounting for more than 60 million of those.
The announcement ended months of speculation. Polish journalist Borys Nieśpielak first reported in summer 2025 that Fool's Theory was working on a new Witcher 3 expansion. CD Projekt's joint CEO Michał Nowakowski later referenced an unnamed third Fool's Theory project during an investor earnings call — separate from the Witcher 1 remake and support on The Witcher 4. Analyst forecasts had pointed to a possible 2026 release; the confirmed 2027 window came later than expected by the market.
No pricing details for the expansion have been announced. Fans tracking the June 2026 PS Plus lineup and upcoming releases will have to wait until late summer 2026 for the next round of Songs of the Past details. Whether both Songs of the Past and The Witcher 4 can land in 2027 has not been addressed by CD Projekt Red.
The teams behind Songs of the Past
Founded in 1994 and listed on the Warsaw Stock Exchange (CDR.WA), CD Projekt Red is the developer behind the entire Witcher game series and Cyberpunk 2077. The Witcher 3 (2015) remains the studio's defining commercial and critical achievement. The studio has The Witcher 4, a second Cyberpunk project, and titles codenamed Sirius and Hadar in active development. Official news at cdprojekt.com.
Founded in 2015, Fool's Theory is staffed by Witcher veterans including CEO Jakub Rokosz (quest designer, The Witcher 2 and 3). The studio co-developed parts of Baldur's Gate 3 and Divinity: Original Sin 2 with Larian, and released Seven: The Days Long Gone (2017) and The Thaumaturge (2024). It is also simultaneously developing the Witcher 1 remake in Unreal Engine 5 for CD Projekt Red. Check our coverage of other major 2026 game updates at The Game Tribune.
The title Songs of the Past has not been explained by CD Projekt Red. No story details, chapter count, map area, or gameplay mechanics have been confirmed beyond Geralt's return as protagonist and the 2027 window. The studio's statement confirmed only that players will engage in “a brand new adventure” as Geralt, with further specifics scheduled for late summer 2026.
The previous two expansions set a high bar: Blood and Wine introduced an entirely new region with over 20 hours of story content. Whether Songs of the Past follows a comparable scope has not been addressed by CD Projekt Red. Gamers following active live-service titles like Diablo IV or League of Legends patch cycles will find CD Projekt Red's late-summer 2026 reveal date on their calendar.
