Valheim Arrives on Switch 2 — September 9, 2026.
Iron Gate’s Norse survival game hits version 1.0, brings the Deep North to every platform, and is playable on Nintendo Switch 2 for the first time.
Valheim, the Viking survival game developed by Sweden-based studio Iron Gate and published by Coffee Stain Publishing, will leave Early Access on September 9, 2026. The 1.0 launch arrives simultaneously on Nintendo Switch 2, PlayStation 5, PC, Linux, Mac, Xbox One, and Xbox Series X|S — with full cross-play across all platforms. The release date was confirmed on June 7, 2026, by Iron Gate directly: “Valheim 1.0 will arrive on 9 September, with new enemies to kill, bases to build and weapons to craft.” Since its Early Access debut in February 2021, the game has accumulated over 12 million copies sold and a 94% “Very Positive” rating on Steam with more than 524,000 positive reviews. Alongside the 1.0 release comes the eighth and final biome, Deep North — a frozen realm that draws the five-year Early Access journey to a close. Looking to dive into other major releases this year? New Biome · Final Frontier
Deep North: What Awaits at 1.0
Deep North is the eighth and final biome in Valheim — a frozen land of snow mesas, eternal stillness, and buried history. According to Iron Gate, players will arrive to what looks like a peaceful snow-covered landscape, only to discover abandoned villages and evidence of past civilisations. As players explore, ghost-like remnants of fallen Vikings, new dungeon structures, and ancient towers emerge. Unlike Mistlands and Ashlands before it, Deep North is not designed as an escalation in pure difficulty. Instead, it draws from the quieter, exploratory tone of the early biomes. Players will be able to tame moose, observe seals on the snow, and explore its frozen reaches before confronting its deeper threats. Want more big gaming launches to watch? Key Questions About the 1.0 Launch
Answers drawn from official Iron Gate and Coffee Stain Publishing announcements.
Is Valheim 1.0 launching on all platforms at the same time?
Yes. September 9, 2026 is confirmed across PC (Steam, Microsoft Store), Linux, macOS, Xbox One, Xbox Series X|S, PlayStation 5, and Nintendo Switch 2 simultaneously. The Iron Gate announcement on June 7, 2026 confirmed full cross-play between all of these platforms on day one.
What is the Deep North biome?
Deep North is the eighth and final biome in Valheim — a frozen realm described by Iron Gate as the conclusion of the game’s early access journey. It features new enemies including the Gammeltroll, new dungeons and towers, tameable moose, seals, and a Jotunn boss. Iron Gate describes the arrival as deceptively peaceful: a snowstorm clears to reveal frozen mesas before the land’s deeper threats emerge. The biome is confirmed to carry new enemies, weapons, and crafting blueprints.
Will existing PC saves work after the 1.0 update?
Iron Gate has not officially confirmed specific save compatibility details for 1.0 at time of writing. Players are advised to monitor the official Valheim news page and Steam announcements for save migration guidance closer to September 9.
Who developed and published Valheim?
Valheim was developed by Iron Gate, a Sweden-based independent studio, and published by Coffee Stain Publishing — the company also behind Satisfactory and Deep Rock Galactic. The Nintendo Switch 2 and PS5 ports were assisted by external developers, while Iron Gate’s core team focused on content and 1.0 development.
