// Breaking — June 2026 // Summer Game Fest Live

The wait is over. Square Enix has officially announced Final Fantasy VII Revelation — the third and final chapter of the FF7 Remake trilogy — at Summer Game Fest Live 2026. Director Naoki Hamaguchi and English voice actor Matt Mercer took the stage at the Dolby Theatre in Los Angeles to unveil the game’s title, first trailer, and extended gameplay footage.

Coming in Spring 2027 — which also marks the 30th anniversary of the original 1997 PlayStation release — this is the first title in the Remake trilogy to launch simultaneously across all platforms on day one. Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, and newly playable Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind face Sephiroth, Meteor, and the WEAPONS — the planet’s own defences — across an open world traversable by the iconic Highwind airship. Previous games in the series had timed platform exclusivity at launch. Revelation drops that entirely.

The Remake Trilogy — A Decade in the Making

April 2020

Final Fantasy VII Remake launches on PS4 as a timed exclusive, covering the Midgar section of the original game. Square Enix later releases the upgraded Intergrade edition for PS5 and, in January 2026, for Xbox and Nintendo Switch 2.

February 2024

Final Fantasy VII Rebirth launches on PS5 as a timed exclusive. The game expands beyond Midgar into a wider open world, introducing a large cast of party members. Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind appear in the story but are not yet playable.

September 2023

Producer Yoshinori Kitase confirms a “first draft” of the final game’s script has been completed, while noting it would be shaped by player response to Rebirth. Director Naoki Hamaguchi later confirms the game’s name was locked in by January 2026.

June 5, 2026

Final Fantasy VII Revelation officially announced at Summer Game Fest Live in Los Angeles. Simultaneous multi-platform launch confirmed for Spring 2027 — the first time in the trilogy with no timed exclusivity. Two trailers drop: a cinematic reveal and a five-minute gameplay showcase.

Revelation is built around the Highwind — the iconic airship that serves as the party’s primary mode of travel across the full open world. Square Enix calls it “our most expansive open world yet.”

Players can fly the Highwind to any region of the planet and, when ready to land, leap from the ship and parachute directly to the ground in a seamless transition. Matt Mercer, voicing Vincent Valentine, described the freedom plainly: “Pick a direction and set sail. Where will the winds guide you first? That freedom is in your hands.”

Unlike Remake’s linear Midgar setting and Rebirth’s partial open world, Revelation’s map covers the entire planet — including areas the first two games only referenced.

⚔️
Vincent & Cid Join the Fight
Fully Playable Party Members

Both Vincent Valentine and Cid Highwind appear in Rebirth but are not playable there. In Revelation, they join the active party as fully controllable characters for the first time in the trilogy.

Vincent Valentine is a gunslinger whose combat style combines lightning-fast rifle attacks with his ability to transform into powerful bestial forms during battle. English voice actor Matt Mercer reprises the role and was present onstage at Summer Game Fest to narrate the gameplay reveal.

Cid Highwind wields his signature spear — functioning as a dragoon — and can close distance for single-target strikes or sweep groups with area-of-effect attacks. The confirmed party roster for Revelation includes Cloud, Tifa, Barret, Red XIII, Yuffie, Cait Sith, Vincent, and Cid.

🧥
The FITS System
Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear

FITS stands for Function Integrated Tactical Suitwear — Revelation’s new job system. Players equip unique outfits that each bestow distinct movesets and abilities, drawing from classic Final Fantasy job archetypes.

Square Enix confirmed examples include Black Mage and Warrior job types — so Tifa can be dressed as a Black Mage and fight with a magic-focused moveset, while Cloud can take on a Warrior configuration. The system is built on top of the real-time action combat established in Remake and evolved in Rebirth, adding a layer of strategic customisation without replacing the core mechanics.

This is the first traditional job system introduced in the Remake trilogy, evoking the class-based structure familiar from earlier mainline Final Fantasy titles like FF5 and FF3.

🌊
The WEAPONS
Planetary Guardians — Boss Encounters

In Final Fantasy VII lore, the WEAPONS are massive creatures spawned by the Planet itself as a defence mechanism — activated when the Planet detects a catastrophic threat. In the original 1997 game, they awaken after Meteor is summoned by Sephiroth.

Revelation’s trailer ended with a glimpse of a Godzilla-scale creature rising from the ocean, confirming the WEAPONS as major combat encounters. With Meteor already in the sky, the WEAPONS are active across the globe — and the party must contend with them while racing to stop the end of the planet.

The Square Enix press release describes the scenario directly: “A meteor mars the sky, monstrous planetary guardians wreak havoc across the globe, and the fires of war rage.”

Confirmed Locations
World Map — Full Planet

Square Enix confirmed several key regions from the original FF7 that will appear in Revelation:

Wutai — the warrior nation and home of party member Yuffie Kisaragi, which was not adapted in Rebirth. Mideel — described in official materials as the “sun-drenched Mideel archipelago.” The Northern Continent — referred to as the “frozen wastes,” a critical story location in the original game. The outskirts of Midgar are also referenced.

Queen’s Blood — the in-game card game introduced in Rebirth — is confirmed to return and be expanded in Revelation. Snowboarding, a fan-favourite minigame from the original, is also confirmed to make a comeback.

From Square Enix — Official Statements

I’m beyond excited to announce Final Fantasy VII Revelation, launching simultaneously across all platforms in Spring 2027. I’m truly grateful to our fans who believed in this story and supported us for so many years. In this title, centered around ‘resolve,’ Cloud and his companions will confront their respective convictions and continue their journey towards the final battle that will determine the planet’s fate.

Over time, we believe each fan has developed their own unique interpretation of the story, and our goal has been to bring all of these Final Fantasy VII stories together so that they ultimately converge in the final chapter of the Remake Series.
