Rockstar Games just dropped big news for video game fans. Grand Theft Auto VI won’t arrive until May 26, 2026. This pushes the game back from its expected 2025 release that many hoped for after seeing the first trailer last December.

Rockstar admitted the delay in simple terms: “We are very sorry that this is later than you expected.” They explained they need the extra time to make sure the game meets the high standards players expect.

This means fans must wait even longer for the next chapter in the hugely popular series. The last game, GTA V, came out way back in 2013 and has sold an incredible 200 million copies, bringing in over $8 billion.

The boss of Rockstar’s parent company, Strauss Zelnick, backed up the decision. He said the company stands firm in its “commitment to excellence” despite understanding how eager players are

The news hit Take-Two’s stock, which fell 6% after the announcement. But industry experts weren’t surprised. Mike Hickey, who analyzes game companies, pointed out that Rockstar has always put quality before deadlines.

The December trailer, which has been watched over 250 million times, showed the game will take place in Vice City, a Miami-like setting. It also revealed the series’ first playable female main character, Lucia, who appears to be part of a criminal duo similar to the famous Bonnie and Clyde.

Delays aren’t new for Rockstar. Earlier games like GTA IV and GTA V also faced similar setbacks before they finally hit store shelves.

The postponement creates breathing room for other game releases in late 2025. Game analyst Matthew Ball noted that GTA 6 was expected to “devour billions of dollars in consumer spend” during that period.

Rockstar promised to share more details about the game soon, giving fans something to look forward to during the longer wait.
