Trench lines, extraction runs, and 500+ map configurations — here’s everything confirmed about Modern Warfare 4

What You Need to Know

Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 was officially announced on May 28, 2026 — and the release date is set for Friday, October 23, 2026. Developed by Infinity Ward and published by Activision, it is the twenty-third entry in the Call of Duty series and the fourth in the rebooted Modern Warfare sub-series. The game is built exclusively for current-generation hardware: PlayStation 5, Xbox Series X|S, PC, and Nintendo Switch 2. It will not be available on PlayStation 4 or Xbox One.

The campaign centers on a North Korean invasion of the Korean Peninsula, placing players in the boots of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier, alongside the return of operator-turned-outlaw Captain Price. Multiplayer ships with 12 core 6v6 maps, a new gunplay system called Ballistic Authority, and a dynamic map called Kill Block. The DMZ extraction mode also returns — more details on that drop on June 7. The Switch 2 version marks the first Call of Duty on a Nintendo platform in 13 years, since Call of Duty: Ghosts on Wii U in 2013. The Modern Warfare 4 campaign puts players in the boots of Private Park, a young South Korean soldier facing live combat for the first time alongside his squad. What starts as a routine patrol collapses into a full-scale North Korean invasion, driving Park and his unit through collapsing cities and desperate counteroffensives. The campaign also reunites players with Captain Price, now operating outside the system he once served. A hunt for revenge pulls him toward a weapon capable of shifting the global balance of power — into consequences he can no longer escape.

New Setting for the Series

The Korean Peninsula is a new theater for the Modern Warfare franchise — built with attention to the culture, history, and military detail of the region. The conflict on the peninsula acts as the catalyst for a broader global war.

Pre-orders are live now at CallofDuty.com, with a 10% loyalty discount for eligible players who own and have played a Call of Duty title released in 2019 or later on the same platform account.

Multiplayer in Modern Warfare 4 is built around grounded, precise combat with a focus on fluid movement and player control. The key new systems are Ballistic Authority, Kill Block, updated movement mechanics, and an overhauled progression system. The game ships with 12 core 6v6 maps, dedicated Gunfight maps, and multiple Big War maps for large-scale vehicle and infantry combat.

Prestige Paths

Two Prestige options at max Soldier Rank: Classic Prestige resets Create-a-Class progression for increased XP earn rates and exclusive rewards; Regular Prestige restarts from Level 1 without resetting loadout content. Both paths have their own reward milestones.

Gunsmith returns with deeper customization options and attachments now shared by weapon class. A new in-game tool called Gunny — developed using configurations from Infinity Ward’s Weapons Team — lets players quickly assemble close-, mid-, or long-range builds based on their playstyle. Fully leveling a weapon unlocks Apex Attachments, specialized modifications that can meaningfully alter a weapon’s handling, firing behavior, stealth capability, or combat role. Additional Multiplayer details are expected via the “From the Ward” video series.

DMZ returns in Modern Warfare 4 as the dedicated extraction experience. Players deploy solo or as a squad into a volatile conflict zone as an off-the-books asset, tasked with recovering advanced military technology left behind in the wake of war. The conditions in the exclusion zone shift constantly — changing weather, dynamic military objectives, and hostile forces moving throughout the zone at all times.

Every Deployment is Different

Loot, fight, negotiate, betray, and extract with whatever you can carry. The harder you push, the harder the world pushes back. Every run is a risk, every encounter is a choice, and no two deployments play out the same way.

Infinity Ward has confirmed that a full DMZ reveal — including gameplay-focused coverage — is scheduled for June 7, 2026. For players waiting on a bigger challenge before then, our look at Diablo 4’s latest patch and Season 13 is worth a read.

Multiplayer Tech

Ballistic Authority: The New Gunplay Standard

Infinity Ward describes Ballistic Authority as a “weapon-first technology stack” — a single tuned combat fidelity system that aligns bullet trajectory, weapon motion, operator stance, camera, audio, field of view, and target visibility. The stated goal: no bloom, no guesswork, and no doubt.

Before vs. After

Previous MW Gunplay

Hipfire bloom spread shots unpredictably within a cone
Recoil and convergence behavior could feel disconnected from input
Depth of field and visual effects sometimes obscured enemy visibility
Weapon behavior near walls and corners was inconsistent

MW4 Ballistic Authority

Hipfire bloom removed — shots go where the weapon is pointed
Recoil and weapon handling rebuilt to reflect player input directly
DoF and visual effects refined to improve enemy readability
Weapons respond naturally to movement, stances, and environment

Movement has also been redesigned: mantling, climbing, hanging, and jumping create new options for repositioning, flanking, and navigating vertical spaces. All movement systems are designed to preserve the grounded physicality of Modern Warfare while keeping combat fluid.

New Map Mode

Kill Block: The Map That Rebuilds Itself

Kill Block is set inside the Westbridge Training Facility. Built from modular sections, the combat space physically reconfigures between rounds — creating new routes, sightlines, and cover positions. Infinity Ward confirmed more than 500 distinct configurations at launch, with more added through live seasons.

The centre “Hero Slab” acts as the main engagement anchor each round. Side slabs shift position and rotation between rounds, forcing players to re-read the map from scratch. Kill Block supports 3v3 and 10v10 modes, with future support for additional core Multiplayer modes.

Kill Block supports expanded Gunfight formats including 3v3 and 10v10 experiences. Infinity Ward confirmed more configurations will be added throughout MW4’s live seasons.
