The Gothic Trilogy Is Finally Coming to PlayStation & Xbox

THQ Nordic has confirmed release dates for all three Gothic Classic games on PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One — rolling out in stages from July through November 2026. A full remake of the first game, Gothic 1 Remake, arrives even earlier on June 5, 2026. The series was originally developed by now-defunct German studio Piranha Bytes, and its influence shaped some of the biggest RPGs of the modern era — including titles that defined PlayStation’s storytelling legacy.

Gothic 1 Remake
A full rebuild of the original 2001 game, developed by Alkimia Interactive — THQ Nordic’s Barcelona-based studio. Built from the ground up with updated visuals and modernised gameplay, while staying faithful to the original RPG’s structure. The remake’s demo, available on Steam since February 2025, was well received by fans after an earlier prototype in 2019 drew criticism for feeling too different from the Piranha Bytes original.

Gothic Classic (Gothic 1)
The original 2001 RPG — now on consoles for the first time on PlayStation and Xbox. The game places you as a nameless prisoner dropped into a sealed mining colony, where three rival factions fight for control. With over 50 hours of gameplay and a living world where NPCs follow daily routines — waking, working, eating, sleeping — Gothic was one of the first European RPGs to feature fully voiced dialogue. The game already launched on Nintendo Switch in September 2023.

Gothic II Complete Classic
Includes both the 2002 base game and its substantial expansion, Night of the Raven (2003) — in a single package. The follow-up to Gothic expands beyond the original colony, with a larger open world set around the city of Khorinis. Combined with the expansion, this edition runs well past 100 hours of content. Gothic II is already available on Nintendo Switch (released November 2023) and is widely regarded by fans as the high point of the series.

Gothic 3 Classic
The 2006 open-world conclusion to the trilogy, with the Nameless Hero arriving on the orc-occupied mainland of Myrtana. This version ships with the community-made Patch 1.75 — a widely praised fix developed by the Gothic modding community that addresses many of the original release’s bugs and performance problems. Gothic 3 Classic also includes tailored gamepad controls. A Nintendo Switch 2 version has been confirmed through retailer listings, also launching November 24, 2026.

Choose Your Camp

The original Gothic drops you into a prison colony where three factions are fighting for control — and you have to pick a side. Tap each camp to learn what they stand for.

🔥 Old Camp — The Ore Barons

The most powerful faction in the colony, controlling the ore trade with the outside world. The Old Camp is run by the ore barons and enforced by their mercenary guards. Joining them gives you access to the colony’s political muscle — but you’ll be working for people who don’t have your best interests at heart.

⚔️ Combat-focused progression path
🏰 Located in the main fortress of the colony
💎 Controls the magical ore supply to the kingdom
💧 New Camp — The Rebels

A breakaway faction that wants to destroy the magic barrier and escape the colony. The New Camp collects water — the colony’s other currency — and funds research into dismantling the barrier. It’s run by outlaws and mages with a shared goal of getting out, not just surviving.

🔮 Access to mage magic specialisations
🏕️ Positioned near the barrier’s power source
💧 Trades in water, not ore
✨ Sect Camp — The Sleepers

The most unusual of the three factions. The Sect Camp worships a mysterious being known as the Sleeper and believes it will free them from the colony. Members follow a strict spiritual code, eat no meat, and cultivate a mind-altering plant called swampweed. Their motives are the hardest to read — and their path is the most unpredictable.

What’s Inside Each Release

Each title in the Gothic Classic Trilogy is sold separately. Here’s a breakdown of what each package includes and what’s new about these console versions.

⚔️Gothic 1 Remake — Built From Scratch
Developed by Alkimia Interactive, a studio founded by THQ Nordic specifically for this project. This is a full rebuild of the original 2001 game — completely updated graphics and controls, while preserving the original world layout, story, and tone. An earlier 2019 prototype drew criticism for feeling too different from the Piranha Bytes original; Alkimia’s revised approach, with a demo released in February 2025 still available on Steam, received a much warmer reception from fans.

🏚️Gothic Classic — The 2001 Original
The original 2001 PC game, ported to consoles with gamepad support. The world is set in a single large colony with no loading screens between areas, where the Nameless Hero works through faction politics to earn his freedom. Characters follow daily routines — waking, eating, working, sleeping — and react to the player’s actions. With over 50 hours of gameplay and three factions to align with (Old Camp, New Camp, Sect Camp), it was one of the first European RPGs with fully voiced dialogue. Gothic Classic launched on Nintendo Switch in September 2023 and is now coming to PlayStation and Xbox for the first time.
🌊Gothic II Complete Classic — Game + Expansion
The most content-dense package in the trilogy. Gothic II (2002) continues after the events of the first game, with the Nameless Hero arriving in the city of Khorinis and a larger open world to explore. The included Night of the Raven expansion (2003) adds a substantial new area and pushes the combined playtime well past 100 hours. CD Projekt Red developers have publicly cited Gothic II as one of their favourite RPGs. Gothic II Complete Classic launched on Nintendo Switch in November 2023.
🌍Gothic 3 Classic — With Community Patch 1.75
Gothic 3 (2006) was the most ambitious entry in the series — a fully open world across the mainland of Myrtana, with over 50 monster types, 100+ weapons, and hundreds of individually voiced characters. Its original launch had significant technical problems, but this console version ships with Community Patch 1.75 from day one — a fix produced by the Gothic modding community that addresses the original release’s bugs and performance issues. Custom gamepad controls and further optimisation are also included. A Nintendo Switch 2 version (physical game-key card) is confirmed via retailer listings, also launching November 24, 2026.

The Series That Shaped The Witcher

Gothic’s popularity in Poland — where CD Projekt localised and published the first two games — had a direct effect on how The Witcher was designed.

🎮
CD Projekt Red Connection
CD Projekt’s head of studio Adam Badowski stated that their gameplay goal was to copy what they knew from Gothic, calling it “a legendary series, at least for us.” The first two Gothic games were a primary source of inspiration for The Witcher series, per CD Projekt’s own published statements. The Gothic series is available on Steam to this day.
🌍
A German Studio’s Legacy
Piranha Bytes, the Essen-based studio behind the original trilogy, was acquired by Embracer Group and closed in June 2024 after 27 years. The Gothic IP is now owned by THQ Nordic, which is driving the remake and console ports.
🗣️
Pioneering Voice Acting
Gothic was one of the first European RPGs with fully voiced dialogue — a technical achievement in 2001. The Polish dub, added in 2002, is widely considered the best version of the game and helped fuel its massive following in Eastern Europe.
🛠️
Community Kept It Alive
The modding community produced Community Patch 1.75 for Gothic 3 — a large-scale fix that addressed bugs and performance issues from the original 2006 release. That same patch now ships as standard with Gothic 3 Classic on all platforms. The PC versions remain available on Steam to this day.

The Gothic Classic Trilogy — comprising Gothic Classic, Gothic II Complete Classic, and Gothic 3 Classic — was covered above in full, including THQ Nordic’s confirmed release schedule across PS5, PS4, Xbox Series X|S, and Xbox One throughout 2026. The pre-order bonus for Gothic 1 Remake and the inclusion of Community Patch 1.75 in Gothic 3 Classic were also addressed. The release plan, pricing at $29.99 per title, and confirmed Nintendo Switch 2 availability for Gothic 3 were all detailed above.
