Sony Santa Monica Studio has officially confirmed that God of War Laufey will launch on February 16, 2027, exclusively for PlayStation 5. The announcement came at San Diego Comic-Con 2026, revealing the first major entry in an ambitious multiverse strategy for one of gaming’s most celebrated franchises.
The game marks a significant departure from series tradition. Laufey — Kratos’s wife and Atreus’s mother — becomes the first playable protagonist in a main God of War entry who is not Kratos himself. While Kratos remains central to the narrative, players will experience the story through Laufey’s perspective, fundamentally changing how the Norse mythology-inspired universe is explored.
Santa Monica Studio has revealed plans to build a God of War universe akin to Marvel’s cinematic model, supporting multiple sequels and spinoffs exploring different characters and storylines. This signals Sony’s long-term commitment to expanding beyond Kratos while leveraging the franchise’s established world and mythology.
Studio head of creative Cory Barlog and game director Ariel Lawrence led the Comic-Con panel, confirming the voice cast. Deborah Ann Woll voices Laufey, with Christopher Judge reprising his role as Kratos. Jack Quaid and Perlina Lau join the ensemble in supporting roles. For fans tracking PlayStation’s exclusive pipeline alongside services like PS Plus, this February 2027 window makes Laufey one of the year’s earliest major system-sellers.
The decision to make Laufey the playable lead addresses long-standing fan discussions about the character. In previous games, Laufey appeared mainly through memories and flashbacks, leaving her story untold. This entry delivers her complete narrative arc, allowing players to see the Nine Realms through her perspective.
The announcement arrived alongside other major franchise developments. Santa Monica revealed that a remake of the original God of War Greek trilogy is officially in development, offering a modernised experience of the series’ roots. Sony has also surprise-launched God of War: Sons of Sparta, developed by Mega Cat Studios with Santa Monica’s writing team — a 2D action platformer following young Kratos alongside his brother Deimos.
Following Laufey’s launch, Santa Monica confirmed that a new Kratos-led God of War is already in development and will connect directly to Laufey’s story. Cory Barlog, who directed the 2018 entry but stepped back for Ragnarök, is understood to be working on an unannounced project that may expand the franchise universe further.
PlayStation 5 exclusivity ensures Laufey remains a defining console-seller. The game will not release on Xbox or PC at launch. Pre-orders and detailed gameplay information are expected in the months ahead, with Santa Monica confirming that more details on mechanics, scale, and multiverse connectivity will follow in upcoming announcements.
