Larian Studios has set April 15, 2025, as the release date for Patch 8, the last major update for the hit RPG Baldur’s Gate 3. The update will launch simultaneously across all platforms: PC, Mac, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S.

The highlight of Patch 8 is the addition of 12 new subclasses, one for each base class in the game. Players will soon be able to grow in size as a Path of the Giants Barbarian, charm enemies as a College of Glamour Bard, or teleport using swarms of insects as a Swarmkeeper Ranger.

Larian plans to host a special Twitch stream on April 16 featuring senior systems designer Ross Stephens and senior communications developer Aoife Wilson to showcase the new subclasses in detail.

Beyond new character options, Patch 8 brings several highly requested features. Players across different platforms will finally be able to play together thanks to new cross-play functionality. A comprehensive photo mode will let players capture their adventures with filters, camera controls, and customizable options.

Xbox Series S owners will benefit from the addition of split-screen co-op, a feature previously unavailable on the less powerful console. The update also includes performance improvements aimed at reducing load times and fixing bugs, including issues with save games in the Gauntlet of Shar and freezes during modded multiplayer sessions.

The patch follows months of public testing that began in January 2025, allowing Larian to refine the content based on player feedback. Early testers have reportedly found the Hexblade Warlock and Swashbuckler Rogue subclasses particularly impressive.

While Larian moves on to develop two new RPGs based on their own original properties, Hasbro (owner of the Baldur’s Gate IP) has hinted at future plans for the franchise. Dan Ayoub, Senior Vice President of Digital Games at Hasbro, stated they are “working out our plans for the future” of Baldur’s Gate with news coming “in pretty short order.”

Baldur’s Gate 3 has sold over 10 million copies since its release and won numerous Game of the Year awards in 2023. To mark the upcoming update, Larian is offering a 20% discount on Steam until April 21, bringing the price down to £39.99.

This final major update represents the culmination of post-launch support for a game widely regarded as one of the greatest RPGs ever made, adding even more replay value to an already massive adventure.
