Ubisoft’s AC Multiplayer Title Got Its First Playtest — Insiders Say It Went Very Badly

The standalone PvP multiplayer game for Assassin’s Creed, built by For Honor veterans at Ubisoft Montreal, received its first reported playtest on April 30, 2026. French insider j0nathan posted on May 2 that the feedback was “absolutely terrible” — and that a delay or cancellation was a real possibility. Below is the full picture, in order.

Every confirmed and reported development around AC: Codename Invictus, in chronological order

Project Greenlit Under Codename Invictus
The codename first surfaced in a September 2022 interview with series Vice President and Executive Producer Marc-Alexis Côté. Ubisoft confirmed a team of For Honor veterans at Ubisoft Montreal would build a standalone multiplayer title as part of the Assassin’s Creed Infinity hub.

First Leak: A Fall Guys-Style Format Described
French YouTuber and Ubisoft insider j0nathan (@xj0nathan) posted that Invictus would follow a Fall Guys-style format — 16 players competing across multiple rounds set in different historical time periods, using characters from the franchise. Visuals were described as comparable to Fortnite. Ubisoft has not confirmed these descriptions.

Anonymous Developer Reportedly Calls It “Appalling”
j0nathan posted citing an anonymous Ubisoft developer who described internal morale around the project in blunt terms.

Ubisoft: Development Is “Progressing Steadily”
Ubisoft’s official franchise update on Ubisoft.com, written by new Head of Content Jean Guesdon, described the project as progressing “steadily with a test and learn approach” and addressed the rumours:
“It’s a new approach to multiplayer in the franchise, but it isn’t quite what the rumors have suggested. With player feedback at the heart of our approach, we’re exploring ways to bring the community in earlier so we can shape the experience together. The team is incredibly passionate about what they’re building.” — Ubisoft, March 4, 2026

April 30 Playtest Reported as “Absolutely Terrible”
On X, j0nathan (@xj0nathan) shared what appeared to be an email invite for an April 30, 2026 PC-only playtest. Citing second-hand feedback from participants, he posted:
“There were tests of Assassin’s Creed Invictus last month (April 30th, to be exact), and I’ve heard it’s absolutely terrible. It’s supposed to be released at the end of the year, but there’s a good chance it will be delayed or even canceled.” — j0nathan (@xj0nathan), May 2, 2026

Assassin’s Creed: Codename Invictus has been in development since 2022. It is led by a team of For Honor veterans at Ubisoft Montreal and confirmed by Ubisoft as a standalone PvP multiplayer experience — the franchise’s first dedicated multiplayer title since the social stealth modes in Assassin’s Creed Brotherhood, Revelations, and III. According to leaks from j0nathan, the format involves 16 players competing across multiple rounds in different historical periods, with characters drawn from across the franchise. Ubisoft has not confirmed these details.

“It isn’t quite what the rumors have suggested.”

— Ubisoft, official franchise update, March 4, 2026

j0nathan’s May 2 post was based on second-hand accounts — he did not personally attend the April 30 playtest. He noted the test was PC-only, and separately confirmed that the 2026 release window rumours he had previously reported were accurate. Ubisoft has issued no official comment on the playtest or the reports about its outcome.

Invictus is not the only AC title in an uncertain state. Assassin’s Creed Jade — originally scheduled for 2024 — has had no confirmed release date. Codename Hexe, set during the 16th-century German witch hunts, has had leadership changes, with Jean Guesdon stepping in as creative director. Ubisoft has also cancelled several projects in recent months, including Alterra, a life-simulation new IP. Coverage of the broader gaming landscape continues at The Game Tribune.
