Call of Duty Leaves the PS4
Behind — For Good

After 13 games and 13 years, Call of Duty is done with the PlayStation 4. Activision confirmed on May 4, 2026 that the next entry in the franchise — widely believed to be Call of Duty: Modern Warfare 4 — will not be developed for the PS4. The announcement came directly from the official Call of Duty X account, cutting short a wave of rumors that had claimed playtests were running on Sony’s last-gen hardware. Black Ops 7 (2025) stands as the final Call of Duty title for both PS4 and Xbox One. For players still on those consoles, an upgrade to PS5, Xbox Series X/S, or PC will be needed to keep up with the franchise going forward.

Developed by Infinity Ward. Ghosts launched alongside the PS4 on November 15, 2013 — making it one of the first games available for the console. It was the first Call of Duty title to appear on eighth-generation hardware.
Developed by Sledgehammer Games. Introduced exo-suit movement and a near-future setting. Released across both PS4 and PS3, continuing cross-gen support well into the new console cycle.
Developed by Treyarch. Set in a near-future world with boost-jump traversal and a revamped Zombies narrative. The PS3 version launched with multiplayer only — no campaign.
Developed by Infinity Ward. A space-set campaign with omni-directional combat. Bundled with a remastered version of Call of Duty 4: Modern Warfare for certain editions.
Developed by Sledgehammer Games. Returned the franchise to boots-on-the-ground gameplay set during World War II. Introduced the Headquarters social hub in multiplayer.
Developed by Treyarch. The first mainline CoD without a traditional single-player campaign. Introduced Blackout, the franchise’s first battle royale mode, predating Warzone.
Developed by Infinity Ward. Rebooted the Modern Warfare sub-series with a grounded tone and introduced the Gunsmith system. Laid the technical foundation for Warzone, launched in 2020.
Developed by Treyarch & Raven Software. Set in the 1980s Cold War era. The first CoD to launch simultaneously across PS4 and PS5 at the start of the ninth console generation.
Developed by Sledgehammer Games. Set during World War II, Vanguard integrated with Warzone’s Pacific map, Caldera. Available across both PS4 and PS5.
Developed by Infinity Ward. Direct sequel to the 2019 reboot, bringing back Task Force 141 and introducing Warzone 2.0. Released across both console generations.
Developed by Sledgehammer Games. Originally conceived as a large expansion for MW II, it launched as a standalone title. The game arrived on Xbox Game Pass in July 2024 — eight months after its November 2023 release — marking the first Call of Duty title on the subscription service.
Developed by Treyarch & Raven Software. Set in 1991, it introduced omni-movement and was the first Call of Duty to launch day one on Xbox Game Pass. Still available on PS4 alongside PS5.
Developed by Treyarch. The last Call of Duty to release on both PS4 and Xbox One. Split-screen was not supported on last-gen versions. Black Ops 7 and Warzone recently received mid-season updates including new weapons, maps, game modes, and a RoboCop crossover limited-time event.

How the Rumour Started

The confirmation came after a rumour spread online that the next Call of Duty title was being playtested on PS4 hardware. The claim was traced to leaker Alaix, who posted that Modern Warfare 4 was “currently being playtested on PS4.” The official Call of Duty account responded on May 4, 2026, calling the claim untrue. This aligns with an older report from March 2025 by now-retired leaker TheGhostOfHope, who had previously stated the 2026 entry was not in development for last-gen systems.

According to CharlieIntel, last-gen builds of Modern Warfare 4 were reportedly in development until late 2025, before those versions were cancelled. No official reveal date has been set. Call of Duty games are typically announced around the summer — an Xbox Games Showcase in June is among the events where a formal reveal could take place. CharlieIntel also reported an expected launch window of October 2026, in line with the franchise’s usual autumn release schedule. Neither the title nor the date has been confirmed by Activision or Microsoft.

Three Things That Change in 2026

🎮
No PS4 or Xbox One
The 2026 Call of Duty will target PS5, Xbox Series X/S, and PC only. PS4 and Xbox One — launched in 2013 on older AMD Jaguar-based CPUs — are left behind after 13 consecutive entries. Black Ops 7 already showed the hardware limits on last-gen, with split-screen removed on those platforms.
🎟️
Game Pass — No Day One
Microsoft confirmed the 2026 Call of Duty will not launch day one on Xbox Game Pass Ultimate or PC Game Pass. Black Ops 6 (2024) was the first CoD to launch day one on Game Pass, followed by Black Ops 7 (2025). Going forward, CoD titles are set to arrive on Game Pass approximately one year post-launch.
🔧
Engine & Technical Focus
The CoD 2026 engine has reportedly undergone major redesigns, partly to address the “visual overload” problems seen in recent titles. A single current-gen hardware target gives the development team a cleaner technical foundation — similar to the approach EA’s Battlefield Studios described when dropping old-gen for Battlefield 6, stating the game’s vision “wouldn’t have been possible on the previous generation.”

What Was Covered

The official Call of Duty X account posted on May 4, 2026 that the next game in the franchise is not being developed for PS4. The post responded directly to a rumour — traced to leaker Alaix — that claimed playtests were taking place on last-gen Sony hardware. Black Ops 7 stands as the last Call of Duty title released for PS4 and Xbox One, consoles that first received the franchise with Ghosts at the PS4 launch in 2013. A total of 13 Call of Duty games appeared on PS4 over 13 years of support.

The Game Pass day-one change and the removal of PS4 and Xbox One support were discussed in detail above. The title, release date, and full platform list for the 2026 Call of Duty remain unconfirmed.
