Pokémon Champions is a free-to-start battle simulator from The Pokémon Company, arriving on Nintendo Switch on April 8, 2026. It separates competitive turn-based battling from the mainline RPG series entirely, so players who want strategy without the story grind now have a direct path in. Cross-platform play between Nintendo Switch and mobile devices is planned, with a mobile launch coming later in 2026.
The game has been confirmed as the official Video Game Championships format for Pokémon Worlds 2026, with the first VGC event using Champions at the Indianapolis Regional Championships from May 29–31. Game Producer and Development Director Masaaki Hoshino has described the goal as making high-level competitive battles accessible to players who found the barrier too high in past games — stating the team wanted to “expand that accessibility, to make it something that anyone can jump in and enjoy.”

Meganium’s moves behave as if harsh sunlight is always active — regardless of actual weather. This powers up Fire-type moves used alongside it and strengthens Solar Beam without a charge turn. Synthesis healing is also maximised under sun conditions.
First appeared in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Mega Sol is a brand-new Ability exclusive to Pokémon Champions at launch.

⚔️ Ability: Mold Breaker
Emboar’s moves ignore the target’s Ability entirely. This bypasses defensive abilities like Levitate, Storm Drain, or Flash Fire — removing a key layer of protection that opponents often rely on.
Mold Breaker is an existing ability — but it’s newly applied to Mega Emboar in Pokémon Champions for the first time in any game.

🐉 New Ability: Dragonize
All Normal-type moves become Dragon-type and receive a 20% power boost. This turns moves like Return or Hyper Voice into Dragon-type attacks, expanding coverage significantly and enabling moves that weren’t previously Dragon-type options.
First appeared in Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Dragonize is a brand-new Ability introduced in Pokémon Champions.
How It Works
Getting Into Battles Fast
The biggest structural change in Champions isn’t the free-to-start model — it’s how little stands between a player and a competitive battle. Individual Values (IVs) are removed entirely. Effort Values are replaced with 66 freely distributable stat points. Teams can be generated automatically if you want to skip building. Most critically, a basic recruit from Roster Ranch is available every 22 hours at no cost, and Pokémon HOME lets players carry over compatible Pokémon from Scarlet & Violet, Legends: Z-A, and Pokémon GO.

Roster Ranch
Pick from a randomised pool of 10 Pokémon once every 22 hours for free, or spend Victory Points (VP) for additional recruits. VP cannot be bought with real money.

Allocate 66 stat points freely across any stat. No IVs. Nature and Ability can be changed without rare items. Only fully evolved Pokémon are available at launch.

Every trainer gets an Omni Ring giving access to multiple battle gimmicks — Mega Evolution, Terastalization, Gigantamax. Only Mega Evolution is active at launch; others follow in updates.
