A terrifying new Pokémon has been unveiled for the upcoming game Pokémon Legends: Z-A. Mega Malamar, revealed through a clever “breaking news” video set in Lumiose City, takes the already-dangerous squid Pokémon to frightening new heights with powers that can rewrite personalities and memories. The Pokémon Company showcased Mega Malamar through a live-action news segment that documents citizens of Lumiose City acting strangely, suddenly becoming obsessed with the Dark/Psychic-type creature. The video eventually reveals why – they’ve fallen victim to Mega Malamar’s enhanced hypnotic abilities.

According to official details, Mega Evolution dramatically enlarges Malamar’s brain, causing its psychic power to “overflow” from its body in a vivid, rainbow-colored glow. These enhanced abilities allow it to freely overwrite personalities and memories – a power strong enough to make someone appear like an entirely different person.

The official description warns that Mega Malamar views everyone, including its own Trainer, as pawns. If it disagrees with commands, it may hypnotize its Trainer, making it “an incredibly difficult Pokémon to interact with.” Its glowing, undulating tendrils can detect emotions around it while it battles with calculating efficiency.

Standing at 9’6″ (2.9m) tall and weighing 153.9 lbs (69.8kg), this “Overturning Pokémon” maintains its Dark/Psychic typing from its base form. Its design features vibrant, pulsing colors that enhance its alien, almost Lovecraftian appearance.

Mega Malamar joins previously revealed new Mega Evolutions including Dragonite, Victreebel, and Hawlucha. Each reveal has featured a unique marketing approach – Victreebel got a found-footage horror treatment, while Hawlucha received a lucha libre wrestling theme. The pattern of high-concept reveals has built anticipation for what might come next.

The revelation follows a social media campaign where The Pokémon Company playfully pretended to be hypnotized, declaring Malamar “my friend.” Fans joined in on the joke, creating memes and comparing Mega Malamar’s colorful design to RGB gaming setups.

Pokémon Legends: Z-A, set entirely within Lumiose City during an urban redevelopment project, will release on October 16, 2025. Media reports indicate it will be available for both Nintendo Switch and the upcoming Nintendo Switch 2, though official pages don’t confirm platforms.

The game’s Lumiose City setting and Mega Malamar’s city-wide hypnosis capabilities create an interesting dynamic. With its abilities to control minds in a densely populated urban environment, Mega Malamar’s powers align with the game’s focus on city-scale events and public interactions – potentially adding a unique twist to the city-wide tournament mentioned in previous game information.
