The Last of Us Part 2 Multiplayer Returns

Community modder Speclizer is bringing multiplayer functionality to The Last of Us Part 2 on PC, two years after Naughty Dog cancelled the official online mode

⚠️ Work In Progress

The Last of Us Part 2, originally released exclusively for PlayStation 4 on June 19, 2020, never included the beloved Factions multiplayer mode from the first game. Naughty Dog spent years developing a standalone multiplayer experience called The Last of Us Online, but cancelled the project in December 2023 due to concerns about resource allocation and maintaining their studio identity. Now, modder Speclizer has revealed early footage of a working multiplayer mod for the PC version, which launched on April 3, 2025.

The mod remains in early experimental stages, with Speclizer openly acknowledging the project is “very broken” with limited functionality. The test footage shows two player characters moving through the Seattle Day 1 chapter together, though technical challenges like floating characters and incomplete features persist. Despite these limitations, the mod represents a significant technical achievement for a game designed exclusively as a single-player experience.

What The Mod Brings

🌐
Online Connectivity
Breaking through the single-player barrier to enable multiple players in the same game space. This represents a major technical achievement for a game never designed with networking infrastructure.
⚔️
PvP Combat Planned
Development focuses on player-versus-player gameplay rather than co-op story mode. Speclizer stated that involving NPCs in multiplayer “makes things a lot harder” from a coding perspective.
🗺️
Campaign Map Access
Early tests show players exploring Seattle Day 1 chapter together. The mod utilizes the game’s expansive single-player environments rather than creating dedicated multiplayer maps.
🎯
Battle Mode Integration
Speclizer’s separate Battle Mode mod allows players to spawn NPCs, customize encounters, and create scenarios in any level. This mod revealed on January 5, 2026, complements multiplayer development.
🔓
PC Platform Exclusive
The mod targets The Last of Us Part 2 Remastered on PC exclusively. Console versions lack the open modding environment required for this type of community development.
⚙️
Ongoing Development
Speclizer acknowledges the project contains significant bugs and incomplete features. Early access available through Patreon, though no completion guarantee exists.
