EA has officially announced a brand-new Star Wars game that takes the franchise in a fresh direction. “Star Wars Zero Company” will be a single-player turn-based tactics game, marking a significant departure from recent action-focused Star Wars titles.

The game is being developed by Bit Reactor, a studio formed by veterans from Firaxis Games – the team behind the popular XCOM strategy series. Respawn Entertainment, known for the successful Star Wars Jedi games, is overseeing production alongside Lucasfilm Games.

Fans won’t have to wait long for their first look at the game. Star Wars Zero Company will be unveiled this Saturday, April 19, during a special panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan scheduled for 4:30 PM JST.

Key Details

Star Wars Zero Company is confirmed for PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X|S, suggesting a focus on current-generation hardware capabilities. The game is being built using Unreal Engine 5, which should deliver high-quality visuals.

While specific story details remain limited, the released artwork provides some interesting clues. It shows what appears to be a diverse team including a Jedi with a green lightsaber, a Mandalorian warrior, and a droid. A holographic Battle Droid in the image hints at a possible Clone Wars era connection.

The official Star Wars website teases that players will “recruit an unconventional team of operatives and deploy them on missions unlike any other in the galaxy far, far away.”

Development Background

The collaboration between Respawn and Bit Reactor brings together two different strengths. Respawn has proven their ability to create compelling Star Wars stories with their Jedi series, while Bit Reactor brings deep expertise in tactical gameplay.

Greg Foertsch, who served as art director on XCOM 2 and XCOM: Enemy Unknown, is reportedly the Game Director for Star Wars Zero Company. His experience with tactical games suggests players can expect deep strategic gameplay.

Both studios currently have active job listings for the Star Wars Zero Company development team, indicating the project is still growing.

What to Expect

As a turn-based tactics game, Star Wars Zero Company will likely focus on strategic thinking rather than fast-paced action. Players can expect to control multiple characters, each with unique abilities, making calculated decisions about positioning, attacks, and special moves.

The reference to an “unconventional team” suggests players might control characters operating outside traditional Star Wars power structures – perhaps mercenaries, underworld figures, or special operatives.

With the gameplay reveal coming this weekend, Star Wars fans and strategy game enthusiasts will soon have a clearer picture of what this unique addition to the Star Wars gaming universe will offer.
