Nintendo plans to announce their new console in January 2025, with a March 2025 release date, according to posts from Famiboards gaming forum and Weibo. Nintendo has only confirmed the console will arrive before March 31, 2025, keeping their cards close to their chest.

The initial production run appears conservative at 650,000 units for the first month – a stark contrast to the original Switch’s 2.74 million units. This limited supply raises questions about potential shortages, especially given the Switch’s position as the second best-selling console of all time, behind only the PS2.

According to TwistedVoxel, a rumored price point of $400 has emerged from what they describe as a reputable leaker. While unconfirmed, this potential pricing has received positive reception in online discussions, particularly on Reddit.

Technical Specifications

Nintendo is increasing production of key components, including the NVIDIA T239 chip. According to leaked information, the console may potentially feature dual processors – one in the handheld unit and another in the dock. Twitter user NWeedle claims that a developer with access to the console’s development kit revealed a performance selector allowing users to prioritize either battery life or power in portable mode.

An OLED display is expected, though Nintendo hasn’t confirmed screen specifications. The Joy-Con controllers will reportedly see a redesign with magnetic attachments and larger sizes – perhaps addressing the drift issues that plagued the original Switch.

Game Compatibility

Nintendo has officially confirmed backward compatibility with current Switch games and Switch Online support. Several titles are already confirmed for cross-compatibility:

  • Pokémon Legends Z-A
  • A new Pokémon title (codename “Gaia”)
  • My Time at Evershine
  • Yooka-Replaylee

Additionally, a revamped version of Pokémon HOME is in development for seamless management across both consoles.

Market Impact

Gaming content creator Stephen Georg shared an email referencing “Nintendo Switch(es),” suggesting multiple versions might be planned. This aligns with Nintendo’s historical strategy of releasing standard and “Lite” versions, though traditionally the lighter version arrives years after initial launch.

The console’s codename “Ounce” emerged during a data leak from Pokémon developer Game Freak. This upcoming release arrives as Nintendo faces increasing competition in the handheld gaming space.

The conservative initial production run of 650,000 units reflects ongoing supply chain concerns affecting the tech industry. This cautious approach might lead to supply shortages at launch.

The gaming landscape has evolved significantly since the original Switch’s debut. Whether Nintendo can maintain its unique position in the market with this new hardware remains to be seen. As always, we’ll have to wait for official confirmation of these details from Nintendo themselves.
