NBA 2K26 arrives September 5 with changes that address player complaints while adding new features across multiple game modes. The newest entry in the basketball simulation series brings smoother player movement, an improved shot meter, and online playoffs for franchise modes.
The most noticeable gameplay change is the curved shot meter, replacing last year’s widely criticized dial design. This new meter adjusts based on defensive coverage – making well-contested shots nearly impossible while giving open shooters a better chance to hit their mark.
In most competitive modes, NBA 2K26 uses a “green‑or‑miss” system — perfectly timed shots always go in, while slightly mistimed attempts usually miss. On easier difficulties, near‑perfect shots can still drop.
Player movement also received a significant overhaul. The ProPLAY motion engine makes running, cutting, and defending feel more natural and responsive compared to NBA 2K25’s movement, which some reviewers described as “robotic” and “skating.” This improvement affects every mode in the game.
Franchise mode players will find several meaningful additions. MyNBA now allows online playoffs where commissioners can invite up to 15 friends or open the bracket to public participants. Simulations run approximately 8% faster with three preset options: Normal, Smarter (more realistic trade logic), and Faster (quicker seasons with less deliberation).

NBA 2K26 releases on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, Xbox One, PC, and Nintendo Switch. Four editions are available: Standard, Superstar, Leave No Doubt, and WNBA, with premium versions offering early access before the standard launch.
Early impressions remain mixed on certain aspects. Some reviewers note that offline modes feel “thin” compared to online features, with MyGM’s offseason scenarios described as “forced” and sometimes “unrealistic.” There are also balance concerns about taller player builds potentially dominating team modes.
Post-launch updates are expected to address balance issues once the development team collects more player data after release.
