Locked In for November 19, 2026 — What We Know
Two trailers. Two delays. One confirmed release date. Here is everything verified about GTA 6 — the delays, the records, the confirmed gameplay details, and what comes next before launch.
Grand Theft Auto VI is set in the fictional US state of Leonida, modelled on Florida, with Vice City — a Miami-inspired open world — at its centre. Players take control of Jason Duval and Lucia Caminos, the series’ first dual-protagonist setup and its first female lead. Rockstar confirmed the game is in development in February 2022.
The current release date is Thursday, November 19, 2026, confirmed for PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X|S. A PC version has not been announced for the same date. In its official statement, Rockstar said the delay was to give the game “the level of polish you have come to expect and deserve.”
The game has seen three announced release windows before landing on November 2026. It was originally targeting Fall 2025, then moved to May 26, 2026, and finally to the current date. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick reaffirmed the November 19 date in the company’s February 2026 earnings call, and confirmed marketing would begin in Summer 2026.
Three Announced Windows. One Confirmed Date.
Each announced release window pushed GTA 6 further along the calendar. This is what changed and when.

The Engine, the Budget, and What Was Dismissed
GTA 6 runs on the Rockstar Advanced Game Engine (RAGE). A former Rockstar audio designer, Rob Carr, publicly speculated the engine had been “probably rebuilt entirely” given that GTA V launched on a different generation of hardware. However, developers with direct knowledge told journalist Zack Zwiezen at Kotaku that the RAGE version in GTA VI “builds” on the work done for GTA V and Red Dead Redemption 2 — it was not rebuilt from scratch.
On the rumour front: a claim circulated online that GTA 6’s save-and-load system was broken and had not been built into the game. This was dismissed directly by sources cited in the same Kotaku report. GTA 6 will have saving and loading as expected for any modern title. Take-Two CEO Strauss Zelnick has also confirmed that generative AI was not used in GTA 6’s development.
Budget estimates for GTA 6 have repeatedly appeared online, with some suggesting figures exceeding $1 billion. These remain unconfirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two. GTA V, by comparison, generated over $8.6 billion in lifetime revenue, making it one of the highest-grossing entertainment products of all time. Also of note: in November 2025, Rockstar fired 31 Rockstar North and 3 Rockstar Toronto employees for publicly discussing and distributing confidential information. The company and Take-Two confirmed this was unrelated to the delay announced the same day.
- CONFIRMED: RAGE engine builds on GTA V and RDR2 (per Kotaku sources)
- CONFIRMED: Game will have save/load functionality (per Kotaku sources)
- CONFIRMED: No generative AI used in development (Take-Two CEO, 2026)
- CONFIRMED: Physical editions at launch (Take-Two CEO, Feb 2026)
- UNVERIFIED: Budget exceeding $1 billion — not confirmed by Rockstar or Take-Two
- DISMISSED: Save/load system broken — denied by developer sources
