Director Koshi Nakanishi, who has worked on Resident Evil games since 2012, created the game’s frights over six years of development. Nakanishi consumes horror media including “The Substance,” “The Shining,” and “The X-Files.” The game’s antagonist Victor Gideon, with steampunk-style headgear, draws inspiration from classic horror. Nakanishi varies tempo and rhythm to create unpredictability, stating that continuous exposure to the same experience creates numbness in players.

Grace Ashcroft is the daughter of a woman murdered under mysterious circumstances. When called to investigate another murder on a case she tracks for the FBI, she returns to the Wrenwood Hotel where she witnessed her mother’s death. Her journey takes her from the hotel to the Rhodes Hill Chronic Care Center and into Raccoon City to fight supernatural threats and the undead. Leon S. Kennedy races against time to find a cure for an illness affecting him. Their paths cross as both work to save themselves, a young girl, and confront forces behind the scenes.
