The gaming world buzzed this week as rumors claimed Roblox would shut down on September 1, 2025. These claims, which quickly spread across social media, are completely false. The shutdown story originated from a parody account on X (formerly Twitter) called Roblox Notifier, which posted a fake announcement designed to look official. “Let’s set things straight: Roblox isn’t shutting down,” the company stated on its official X account. “The same hoax (with a few details changed) goes around every year or two.”

While the shutdown claim is fake, it gained unusual traction because it coincided with real challenges facing the platform. Louisiana Attorney General Liz Murrill filed a lawsuit against Roblox on August 14, alleging the platform “prioritizes user growth, revenue, and profits over child safety.” The lawsuit describes Roblox as “overrun with harmful content and child predators” and calls it “the perfect place for pedophiles” due to insufficient safety measures.

Several countries, including Turkey, Oman, China, and Qatar, have banned Roblox in recent months over child safety concerns. Adding to the pressure, a petition demanding CEO David Baszucki’s resignation has gathered over 100,000 signatures.

Former “To Catch a Predator” host Chris Hansen announced on August 15 that he’s producing a documentary about child safety issues on Roblox. Hansen is reportedly working with Michael Schlep, a content creator who claims to have helped identify six predators on the platform before being banned by Roblox.

The platform remains enormously popular, with approximately 85 million daily active users. Roblox claims that half of all American children under 16 use the service at least once a month.

Roblox defended itself against the Louisiana lawsuit, stating: “Any assertion that Roblox would intentionally put our users at risk of exploitation is simply untrue.” The company highlighted its collaboration with law enforcement agencies and child safety organizations.

For parents worried about their children’s safety, Roblox has updated its content policies, banned explicit content, limited private rooms to verified users aged 17 and older, and implemented AI-powered monitoring tools.

While these recurring shutdown rumors are false, they reflect genuine concerns about child safety that Roblox will need to address to maintain trust with families and regulators.
