Sony’s next PlayStation console is bringing major improvements to gaming. Recent leaks suggest the PS6 will offer 5-10 times better ray tracing than the base PS5 and support smooth 4K gaming at 120 frames per second.

The PS6, codenamed “Orion,” will use AMD’s advanced chip technology with eight Zen 6 CPU cores and 40-48 RDNA 5 Compute Units running at about 3GHz. While this is fewer compute units than the PS5 Pro’s 60, the newer technology packs more power into each unit.

Memory is getting a serious upgrade too. The PS6 will likely use new GDDR7 memory with a 160-bit or 192-bit bus running at 32GT/s. This helps the console handle more complex games and faster loading.

What does this mean for gamers? You’ll see much smoother gameplay and more realistic graphics. The PS6 should deliver three times the standard rendering performance of the base PS5 and double what the PS5 Pro can do – similar to what you’d get from a high-end RTX 4080 graphics card.

Ray tracing will see the biggest improvement. This technology creates lifelike lighting, reflections, and shadows in games. With the PS6’s ray tracing being 5-10 times better than the base PS5, games will look dramatically more realistic.

Sony is also working on a handheld companion device called “Canis.” This portable PlayStation will have 4 Zen 6c CPU cores and 12-20 RDNA 5 Compute Units – about half as powerful as the base PS5, but still stronger than competitors like the Xbox Ally X handheld.

Both the PS6 and its handheld will play your PS4 and PS5 games, so your current game library won’t go to waste.

Sony is focusing on efficiency too, aiming for 160W power consumption for the main console. This practical approach could keep the PS6’s price between $500-600, similar to previous console launches rather than matching the higher PS5 Pro price.

Manufacturing is expected to begin in mid-2027, with the console launching between late 2027 and early 2028 – following Sony’s typical seven-year console cycle.

The PlayStation 6 shows Sony’s commitment to next-level gaming while keeping costs reasonable. With its major performance improvements and practical design, the PS6 looks ready to set new standards for console gaming in the years ahead.
