Grand Theft Auto 6 isn’t just getting bigger – it’s getting different. Rockstar Games, the company behind the series, is building something called Project ROME that will change how players interact with the game when it launches in Fall 2025.
Think of Project ROME (Rockstar Online Modding Engine) as a toolkit that lets players create their own stories and experiences inside GTA 6. It’s similar to what players do in games like Fortnite or Roblox, where they can build their own worlds and share them with friends.

“Rockstar has been in discussions with top Roblox and Fortnite creators about creating custom experiences inside the upcoming game,” reveals an industry insider who works closely with these creators. This means players won’t just follow pre-written stories – they’ll be able to make their own.
The game itself is growing too. Rockstar plans to regularly add new cities and missions after launch, rather than making players wait years for new content. The game world will have more buildings players can actually enter compared to previous GTA games.
But this new direction raises questions, especially about how real-world brands might fit in. “Many brands are aware that GTA 6 will be a massive release,” says Samantha Lim from Publicis Media. “However, the game’s mature rating may make it challenging for some brands to activate.”
PC players are already seeing changes. A March 4th update brings the PC version up to speed with PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series versions, adding better graphics, faster loading times, and new features like Hao’s Special Works vehicle upgrades. The update also adds better anti-cheat protection and chat monitoring to make online play safer.

For current GTA Online players, this new direction means more opportunities to shape their own experience. The game will support both traditional GTA gameplay and these new creative tools, letting players choose how they want to play.
Take-Two Interactive, Rockstar’s parent company, has reaffirmed the Fall 2025 release date. While they’re pushing boundaries with Project ROME, a former Rockstar developer suggests the core GTA experience may not be wildly different from its predecessor – it’s just getting more flexible.
This shift reflects broader gaming trends, as more players seek ways to customize and create within their games. GTA 6 aims to deliver both the structured storytelling the series is known for and new tools for players to tell their own stories.
