The popular zombie shooter World War Z received its latest update on April 8, 2025, bringing significant changes to the game’s Extinction Mode along with new features designed to refresh the six-year-old title.
The update primarily focuses on reworking Extinction Mode, which now unlocks after players complete any map on Insane difficulty or higher. The revamped mode includes two selectable Episodes, with rewards granted for completing just one of them. A weekly rotation of weapon skin rewards has been implemented, giving players reason to return regularly.
Time-limited Community Challenges debut in this update, offering shared goals for all players. Completing these challenges rewards players with the Royal Vengeance Heavy Weapons Skin Pack, which includes custom skins for the Machine Gun MAG5, Payload Rifle BF25, and Heavy Assault Shotgun Taiga-12.
Players who conquer the reworked Extinction Mode will earn the Knight Heavy Weapons Skin Pack, featuring exclusive skins for the MGL Hailstorm MGL, RPG Launcher RPGL4, and Heavy Assault Shotgun Taiga-12.
The update introduces seven new mutators: Hot Stuff, Cluster Shells, Doppelganger, Fire-resistant, Acid Spit, Effective Defense, and Overprice. While specific details about these mutators weren’t provided in the patch notes, their names suggest varied effects on gameplay. Additionally, three existing mutators—Epilogue, Sell-out, and Taxes—have been reworked.

The update also addresses several technical issues that have affected player experience. Connection problems when starting full-party sessions have been fixed, alongside an issue where players wouldn’t receive Blue Coins in Extinction Mode if they had already obtained the skin reward.
Other fixes include removing a white stripe from under the minimap, correcting incorrect skin icons for the MAG5, fixing issues with unlocking the “Waster” portrait frame, and addressing Japanese localization problems for several weapon perks.
