Marvel Rivals is adding a new Weapon X skin for Wolverine on June 5, 2025, but many fans are unhappy with one specific detail – Wolverine is wearing pants. The skin, which depicts the hero during his time in the Weapon X program, shows him shirtless with machinery on his head, chest, and arms, but also sporting dark yellow pants.
Comic book readers have pointed out that this design isn’t historically accurate. In Marvel comics, Wolverine during the Weapon X experiments is typically shown nearly naked or in just underwear, emphasizing the brutal nature of the tests performed on him.
“Booty shorts or bust,” wrote one player on Reddit, while another commented, “The Wolvie skin looks great, but we were robbed of pantless Wolvie.” The sentiment across social media platforms is clear – fans believe the pants undermine the raw and vulnerable portrayal of this important period in Wolverine’s backstory.
Despite the pants controversy, the skin does include other accurate elements from the comics, such as a military-style helmet, dog tag necklace, and metal restraints that showcase the character’s ordeal.

The Weapon X skin will be released alongside a “Sunshine Land Shark” skin for Jeff the Land Shark, a popular character in Marvel Rivals. Jeff’s beach-themed skin features brown and white coloring and a hibiscus flower necklace around his neck. This skin joins other summer-themed “Sunshine” costumes previously released for Squirrel Girl and Rocket Raccoon.
Both skins will be available in the in-game store beginning June 5 at 7 PM PDT. While exact prices haven’t been confirmed by NetEase Games, similar skins in the past suggest the Wolverine skin might cost around 2200 Units.
These new skins are part of Marvel Rivals’ ongoing Season 2.5, which recently introduced Ultron as a new playable Strategist character. The update also reworked Jeff the Land Shark, changing his Joyful Splash ability to both heal allies and damage enemies.
Marvel Rivals has also launched a new “Combat Chest” feature that works similarly to a battle pass. For 690 Lattice (the game’s premium currency), players can purchase access to skins for Magneto, Storm, and Mister Fantastic as they gain experience and level up.
The game continues to release new content regularly, with plans to shift to a two-month season format starting with Season 3, introducing a new hero each month to keep the game fresh.
