Rockstar Games has reconfirmed that Grand Theft Auto 6 will release on May 26, 2026, putting to rest recent rumors about further delays. The confirmation comes after weeks of speculation across gaming communities that the highly anticipated title might face additional setbacks.
Former Rockstar developer Obbe Vermeij has dismissed these delay rumors as nothing more than “clout-chasing.” In a statement shared on social media, Vermeij explained that “Rockstar had a free choice and picked May 26. They’re confident.” He added that the company would “make the final call 5 months out” and that “any ‘GTA 6 delayed’ rumor before December is clout-chasing.”
This confidence in the May 2026 release date has also been echoed by Take-Two Interactive CEO Strauss Zelnick, who recently stated his “level of conviction is very, very high” regarding the game’s launch timeline. Zelnick emphasized that while “Rockstar does have a lot of other things going on,” GTA 6 remains “the primary focus” for the company.

The game was originally expected to launch in 2025, as revealed in its first trailer last December. However, in May 2025, Rockstar announced the postponement to May 2026, explaining they needed additional time to “deliver at the level of quality you expect and deserve.”
Industry reaction to the reconfirmed date has been notable, with some publishers reportedly adjusting their release schedules to avoid competing directly with what Devolver Digital’s Nigel Lowrie has called a “AAAAA” release – highlighting GTA 6’s outsized cultural and market impact.
The game will feature dual protagonists Jason and Lucia in a Florida-inspired state called Leonida, centered around Vice City. Reports indicate the map will be larger and more detailed than previous titles, with new gameplay mechanics including relationship systems and an extended campaign estimated at around 75 hours.
Rockstar’s press note addressing the rumors stated: “Grand Theft Auto VI is now set to release on May 26, 2026. We are sorry this is later than expected, and we thank you for your support and patience as we work to finish the game. Our goal has always been to exceed expectations, and GTA VI is no exception.”
While pricing details remain unconfirmed, Take-Two has assured investors the game will be priced “fairly” despite industry speculation about potential $100 price tags for premium editions.
With GTA 5 having sold over 215 million copies since its 2013 release, expectations for the next installment remain sky-high, with investors and gamers alike closely watching for the next official update from Rockstar Games.
