NetEase Games is making big moves with Marvel Rivals as it prepares to launch Season 2: Hellfire Gala on April 11. The free-to-play superhero shooter is introducing Emma Frost as a new playable Vanguard, shortening its season lengths, and implementing substantial gameplay changes to maintain player interest.
Emma Frost Steals the Spotlight
Emma Frost, the telepathic X-Men character known for her diamond form, will join the roster when Season 2 launches. As a Vanguard class hero, she can use her telepathic abilities and diamond form in battle.
Her Team-Up abilities with Psylocke and Magneto, called “Mental Projection,” will be available in the game. She has the ability to create a psychic barrier to support her team.
The character has sparked significant online attention, with many players focusing on her physical appearance rather than gameplay mechanics. This reaction highlights how character design influences community engagement in online games.
Some players have expressed practical concerns about character readability in matches. With Emma Frost joining two other blonde characters in blue-and-white outfits (Invisible Woman and Dagger), some worry about distinguishing between them during fast-paced gameplay.

Major Roadmap Changes
In response to declining player numbers since its December launch peak of 644,269 concurrent players on Steam, NetEase is revamping its content release schedule. Starting with Season 3, season lengths will be shortened from three months to two months.
“Since the launch of Season 1, we’ve been deeply contemplating how Marvel Rivals can continuously deliver fun and engaging experience for you all,” Marvel Rivals creative director Guangyun Chen explained. “During this time, several discussions on social media have certainly added some pressure on us to keep the game as exciting as it has been since December.”
The accelerated schedule will maintain the promise of at least one new hero every half-season, meaning players will see more frequent character additions. Ultron will join mid-Season 2 in May, with more heroes coming afterward at a faster pace.
Balance Changes and New Features
Season 2 brings extensive balance adjustments to many heroes:
- Hulk will receive improved maneuverability and survival abilities
- Peni Parker gets enhanced primary attack damage and combat capabilities
- Hawkeye’s mobility while drawing his bow will improve
- Scarlet Witch will see reduced survivability but increased threat against certain classes
The update also rotates Team-Up abilities, potentially shifting the competitive meta. For example, Luna Snow will no longer give Namor a boosted squid ability, which could affect how these characters are banned in competitive play.
The Season 2 launch will require server downtime beginning at 5am ET on April 11, expected to last 2-3 hours. Along with Emma Frost, players will get access to a new map called Hellfire Gala – Krakoa and a new lineup of battle pass skins.
Marvel Rivals launched in December across PC, PlayStation 5, and Xbox Series X/S, reaching 10 million players in its first three days. While concurrent player numbers have decreased since January, the game remains among Steam’s most-played titles.
