Sony has stopped development on two major online multiplayer games. One was going to be tied to the popular God of War series, while the other was planned as a military combat game.

These games were being made by two experienced Sony studios – Bluepoint Games, known for remaking PlayStation games including Shadow of the Colossus and Demon’s Souls, and Bend Studio, which created Days Gone.

The decision shows how challenging it is to create successful online multiplayer games that require constant player engagement. While traditional games like God of War let players enjoy the story at their own pace, multiplayer live service games need regular updates and an active player community.

Sony had planned to release twelve live service games by March 2026. Now they’ve cut that number to six, focusing on ensuring quality and long-term playability. This comes after several other cancelled projects, including an online version of The Last of Us and Concord, which struggled to maintain player numbers.

The company’s recent success with Helldivers 2 shows there’s still potential for live service games when done right. But the string of cancellations suggests Sony is being more careful about which projects they pursue, considering the significant investment these games require.

Both studios will stay open and work on new projects, though it’s unclear if any jobs will be affected. Sony’s spokesperson confirmed they’re “working closely with each studio” to plan their next games.

For PlayStation owners, this shift suggests a more focused approach to online multiplayer games in the future, while Sony continues its development of both multiplayer and single-player experiences.
