Koei Tecmo’s Warriors: Abyss made an unexpected entrance into the gaming world through PlayStation’s State of Play presentation on February 12, 2025, launching immediately across major platforms. The game, developed by Omega Force, marks a significant shift for the long-running Warriors series by incorporating roguelite elements into its traditional action-focused gameplay.

Available now on PlayStation 5, PlayStation 4, Xbox Series X|S, and PC, with a Nintendo Switch release following on February 13, Warriors: Abyss introduces players to a new setting within the series – the underworld. Players face waves of enemies while navigating through randomly generated stages, a departure from the series’ usual fixed environments.

The game’s character roster exceeds 100 unique heroes, with players able to recruit allies during their journey through hell. A notable feature is the ability to field up to seven active heroes in battle, creating what Koei Tecmo calls “over 16 billion potential battle style combinations.” This system aims to provide fresh experiences with each playthrough, as players experiment with different team compositions and strategies.

At the core of Warriors: Abyss is its blend of the series’ signature “1 vs. 1,000” combat style with roguelite mechanics. Players face increasingly difficult challenges as they descend deeper into the underworld, guided by Enma, the King of the Underworld, in their quest to defeat an entity known as “Gouma.”

For the Warriors series, which has spanned nearly three decades, this release represents another evolution following the success of Dynasty Warriors Origins. The higher, fixed camera perspective combined with roguelite elements suggests Omega Force’s willingness to experiment with the established formula while maintaining the core action gameplay that defined the franchise.

Players who enter Warriors: Abyss’s version of hell will find themselves repeatedly challenging its levels, developing new strategies through different character combinations and adapting to randomly generated environments. This approach aims to extend the game’s longevity beyond the traditional Warriors experience, with each attempt potentially offering new tactical possibilities through its vast combination system.
