Samsung’s recent patent filing for a foldable gaming console, while technically noteworthy, warrants examination of its market positioning.
Samsung Display filed a patent with the World Intellectual Property Organization (WIPO) in 2022, which was internationally registered in November 2024. The patent reveals a clamshell-style device that merges smartphone folding technology with gaming controls. The design incorporates built-in joysticks, a D-pad, and Ultra Thin Glass technology similar to the Galaxy Z Flip 6.
The handheld gaming market currently includes the Nintendo Switch, Steam Deck, and ASUS ROG Ally, as noted in the source documents. Samsung’s potential entry would add another option to this existing market.
The patent documentation includes:
- A foldable screen design
- Built-in gaming controls
- Clamshell form factor similar to Galaxy Z Flip series
Several aspects remain unspecified in the patent:
- Internal hardware specifications
- Battery life and charging capabilities
- Game platform compatibility
According to 91mobiles’ report, the patent shows “recessed analogue sticks and buttons on either side of the screen, but it’s not super clear exactly what these are or how they would function.”

The patent filings, as reported by 91mobiles, show Samsung’s exploration of a foldable gaming device design. Users of Samsung folding screen phones have sometimes reported difficulties with the hinges.
This indicate that it remains at the patent stage, with no confirmed plans for production. According to techies “this is just a patent for now, and there’s no indication that Samsung will be actively moving forward with development anytime soon.”
The patent demonstrates Samsung’s interest in gaming hardware design. Samsung Display collaborated with Nintendo to produce the screens for the Nintendo Switch – OLED Model showing previous involvement in gaming hardware manufacturing.
