Nintendo of Canada announced on June 30 that prices for the original Nintendo Switch products will soon change in Canada. The company cited “market conditions” as the reason behind this decision, which takes effect August 1, 2025.

The price adjustment will impact a wide range of products, including the Nintendo Switch console (currently CA$399), Nintendo Switch OLED Model (CA$449), and Nintendo Switch Lite (CA$269). Beyond the hardware, physical and digital games, accessories like Joy-Cons (CA$99) and Pro Controllers (CA$89), amiibo figures (CA$21-41), and even Nintendo Switch Online memberships will see price changes.

“This pricing change does not apply to the Nintendo Switch 2 system, accessories, or software,” Nintendo stated in its official announcement. The newer Nintendo Switch 2, which launched in June 2025 for CA$630, and its CA$700 bundle with Mario Kart World will remain at their current prices.

Industry analyst Daniel Ahmad of Niko Partners has previously linked higher console costs to “tariff impacts, the weak Japanese yen, and local market conditions,” factors that likely influenced Nintendo’s decision.

The timing of this announcement comes amid heightened trade tensions between the United States and Canada. Last week, U.S. President Donald Trump cut off trade talks with Canada over a proposed 3% tax on American tech companies. This dispute has already led to tariffs being imposed on goods traded between the two countries.

“The global economy has already seen price increases in the video game console market,” notes a recent industry report, pointing to Microsoft’s May 2025 decision to raise Xbox prices globally. The Xbox Series X 1TB model went from US$499 to US$599, while the 2TB version increased from US$599 to US$729.

For Canadian gamers, this price adjustment raises questions about the value of buying the original Switch, which first launched in 2017. With the price gap potentially narrowing between the original Switch and the newer, more powerful Switch 2, consumers may need to weigh their options carefully after August 1.

Former Nintendo marketing leads have noted the company was “surprised” by negative reactions to the Switch 2’s pricing, suggesting Nintendo may be sensitive to consumer sentiment with these upcoming adjustments.

The specific new pricing details will be posted on Nintendo’s Canadian website (www.nintendo.com/en-ca/store/) on August 1, giving consumers one month to purchase at current prices before the changes take effect.
