The upcoming game Avowed will run smoother than originally planned, thanks to extra development time. Players will have two ways to play the game when it launches: a faster mode running at 60 frames per second, or a balanced mode at 40 frames per second.

“We always want to provide the best experience that we can,” says game director Carrie Patel. She explains that making the game run smoothly was one of the final steps in development: “Once we’ve got everything placed and leveled then we can go about optimizing it.”

The game requires 75 GB of storage space on consoles and PC. Xbox Series X players will need exactly 74.77 GB, while PC players through Steam and Xbox App have reported sizes between 71 to 73 GB.

Players who purchase the premium version can start playing on February 13, 2025, while the general release launches on February 18. Players who pre-ordered or have an active Xbox Game Pass or PC Game Pass subscription can preload the game ahead of launch.

Patel is honest about what players should expect at launch. While the game aims to run at 60 frames per second for smoother gameplay, players should expect some “jank” or minor bugs when it first releases.

The game brings players back to the world of Eora, but with a big change – players now see the world through their character’s eyes, unlike the overhead view in Obsidian’s earlier Pillars of Eternity games. The game features a non-traditional class system, offering new ways for players to customize their characters.

To get the best experience with the balanced 40 frames per second mode, players will need a display capable of 120Hz. This middle-ground option aims to deliver both good visuals and smooth gameplay, similar to what players have seen in other recent games like Marvel’s Spider-Man and Starfield.

The development delay appears to have benefited the game. When they first discussed performance last August, they were targeting 30 frames per second. Now, with the balanced mode and 60 FPS options, players will have more choices for how they want to play the game based on their display capabilities.
